A frontier-style Victorian built in 1886, behind a wall on a quiet street three blocks from the Plaza. Stained glass on the stair landing, ornate fireplaces, seven rooms, and a garden that stays cool in the afternoon.

The rooms

Seven, and no two alike. Some have fireplaces, some a sitting area or a claw-foot tub. Beds are made with cotton linens, down comforters and feather pillows. Bath arrangements differ from room to room, so ask when you write.

Every room has air conditioning, a ceiling fan, television, telephone and wireless internet. The suites add a coffee maker and a small refrigerator.

Breakfast, and the rest of the day

8 to 10 in the morning

Southwestern frittatas and breakfast burritos, fruit, homemade muffins and granola, whole grain bread, and coffee roasted nearby. Organic and natural ingredients, and dietary restrictions are no trouble.

Through the afternoon

Cookies and cakes come out of the kitchen, with lemonade in the garden or a fire in the parlor, depending on the season.

5 to 6 in the evening

A complimentary glass of wine and appetizers in the lounge, when the innkeepers help sort out dinner.

The spa

Absolute Nirvana, an Indonesian-style spa in its own building at the back of the garden, open to guests. Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone and Thai massage, and a range of facials. The signature treatment is the Javanese Lulur: two hours of massage, exfoliation, masque and steam, ending in a bath of rose petals.

Getting around

Faithway Street is a short block off Palace Avenue, in the Historic Eastside. The Plaza is about a seven-minute walk, the Cathedral Basilica less, and the galleries on Canyon Road and the museums are all on foot. Skiing, rafting and hiking are a drive up into the mountains.
