ABOUT THE INN
THE FIRST BED AND BREAKFAST IN SANTA FE
The Madeleine, originally named The Preston House, was the first Bed and Breakfast to open its doors in Santa Fe. This elegant New Mexico inn offers you an authentic taste of Santa Fe’s past along with a big helping of convenience and luxury. Whether you dream of a fabulous ski vacation, an intimate Santa Fe wedding, or a memorable weekend getaway, you’ll enjoy your stay at The Madeleine. We strive to offer all the modern-day comforts you’d expect, providing an enchanting alternative to a Santa Fe hotel.
After a full day of touring, where else can you put up your feet with a plate of homemade cookies and tea and let your imagination play? It’s easy to picture the ladies of the house in hoop skirts of velvet and silk, making sure the staff was hard at work.
Owner Carolyn Lee named the inn after her daughter Madeleine. Nearby Hacienda Nicholas is named after Madeleine's twin brother, and Alexander's Inn just up the street is named after their older brother. In naming her inns after her children, Carolyn brought together her two passions in life. The family connection carries over into all three inns. Try The Madeleine for a warm and welcoming environment, with all the amenities of a big hotel.
Built in 1886 by railroad tycoon George Cuyler Preston, this delightful Santa Fe B&B is very much a part of New Mexico tourism. Standing as one of the few architectural reminders of the frontier days of the Wild West, the inn is the only historically- plaqued hotel in Santa Fe New Mexico. It is also one of only two known Queen Anne-style structures in the entire state. Its very design lends ambiance to romantic weekend getaways.
The Madeleine beautifully reflects the construction the railroad made possible in once-isolated Santa Fe. Preston must have enjoyed the Madeleine’s turrets, steep-pitched pressed metal roofs and the ornamental detailing of the graceful Queen Anne style. Imagine him beneath the parlor’s domed ceiling making business decisions over whisky and cigars with his influential friends. Perhaps their wives chatted in the comfortable sitting rooms, warmed by two Edwardian fireplaces, or sipped lemonade outside on the spacious front porch.
Over the years the inn has had many owners, from Santa Fe’s first alternative healer, when it was known as “the Palace of Health”, to the resident who fed so many birds that the house then became known as “The House of Birds”. While the names have changed over the past 100 years, the house retains its original design and elegance, making it one of Santa Fe‘s most beloved bed & breakfasts. Enjoy the history of The Madeleine first-hand.
We always stay here when we come to Santa Fe. We love this B&B!
